Unity Software Inc is a vendor of software solutions for creating and operating real-time, interactive 2D and 3D content for smartphones, tablets, personal computers, gaming consoles and augmented reality devices. Founded in Copenhagen in 2004 as ‘Over The Edge Entertainment’, the business was then a gaming entertainment developer. A change of name to Unity Software occurred in 2007 after its Unity gaming engine became a success. The company is now headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area of Silicon Valley, USA, but has a worldwide presence. Its markets include Greater China, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. Since its beginnings as a gaming entertainment developer, Unity’s product range has diversified for use in the animation industry, the design sector, and architecture and construction. It is now regarded as one of the world leaders in real-time 3D development platforms. As of September 2020, it had raised a total of $1.3bn in funding over eight rounds. Its 16 investors include D1 Capital Partners and Light Street Capital. By 2020, it had acquired 17 companies. An impending IPO in September 2020 saw its share price rise from an expected $34-$42 in the first week of the month to $44-$48 by mid-month. As of September 2020, the company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the one-letter ticker U.
