Established in 1971, the firm is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and mainly focuses on the design, development, production, support, and operation of unmanned aircraft systems and tactical missile systems. The firm also offers commercial solutions such as its Quantix Mapper hybrid VTOL drone through its collaboration with Draganfly, Inc. In addition, the company partners with SoftBank to produce high-altitude pseudo-satellites, the HAPSMobile, which is designed to serve a 200-kilometer area. Operating at a position of 20 kilometres into the atmosphere, it has the potential to reach billions of people worldwide and provide extra bandwidth to support the emerging 5G standard and IoT. In 2021, AeroVironment Inc acquired Progeny Systems Corporation’s Intelligent Systems Group, accelerating the firm’s artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomy initiatives. A further acquisition in 2021 was Arcturus UAV, which added additional leading medium Unmanned Aircraft Systems to the AeroVironment portfolio.
