KPN

Dutch telecommunications provider KPN was founded in 1989 as a result of privatisation measures by the Dutch government. Previously owned by the PTT group, KPN, also known as Koninklijke KPN N.V., provides Internet, mobile, landline and IT services, primarily in the Netherlands. KPN previously owned subsidiaries in Belgium, France and Germany, but has since divested most of those holdings. KPN is traded as KPN.NV on the Amsterdam-based Euronext exchange. As part of its privatisation initiative, the Dutch government began selling off KPN stock, fully divesting its shares by 2006. After relinquishing its veto powers, KPN became a truly private company. Several prominent companies had considered purchasing KPN in the past. Spanish telecom provider, Telefonica, is one such example, strongly considering a bid in 2001 that never materialised. Another instance is the 2013 buyout attempt of KPN by Mexican billionaire, Carlos Slim. Already owning a minority stake of 30% in the company, Slim made a bid of $9.49 billion through his telecom provider, America Movil. It is rumoured that the Dutch government foiled the attempt.
