Founded in 2009, Bilibili is a video-sharing platform that offers immersive entertainment content experiences meant for the younger generation in China. The content was initially inspired by anime, comics, and games, and now covers a wide range of genres and media formats, including videos, live broadcasting, mobile gaming, and more. Headquartered in Shanghai, China, the company operates domestically. Apart from videos, Bilibili also provides games, most of which are anime, comics, and games (ACG)-themed mobile games, such as the Chinese version of Fate/Grand Order. The company offers a diverse range of ways to consume video-based content focused on professional user-generated videos, or PUGV, complemented by live streaming and occupationally generated videos. One of the company’s key features is ‘‘bullet chatting,’’ which enables users to participate in live commenting and displays other viewers’ thoughts and feelings. The company is publicly listed on the NASDAQ with the stock ticker BILI. In 2020, the company announced that Sony Corporation of America had entered into a definitive agreement with Bilibili, according to which Sony would invest approximately $400m in Bilibili. In February 2021, Bilibili acquired Haoliners Cultures Media Co., Ltd., a Shanghai-based animation firm, in its entirety, including Haoliners' Japanese affiliate Emon Animation Company.
