An American pharmaceutical, Spark Therapeutics was founded in 2013 by Jeffery Marrazzo and Katherine High, after the latter began researching promising gene therapy solutions at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The company develops gene therapies for genetic ailments such as blindness, haemophilia and lysosomal storage disorders. Spark Therapeutics focuses mainly on one-time therapies. The company was the first to receive approval in the United States and Europe for trials related to gene therapy. Spark Therapeutics, traded as ONCE on the Nasdaq exchange, went public in 2015. The company’s IPO was extremely successful, raising $161 million at $23 per share. Of the 8 million shares made available, 1 million were set aside for the underwriters of the IPO, J.P. Morgan Securities and Credit Suisse Securities. Swiss pharmaceutical giant, Roche Holdings AG, purchased Spark Therapeutics in 2019. The acquisition was valued at $114.50 per share, for an estimated total of $4.8 billion. Spark Therapeutics stated that the acquisition will help the company meet its objectives thanks to Roche’s significant worldwide presence and considerable resources.
