Live Cattle are full-grown cattle that have reached the necessary size and weight that will make them suitable for consumption. The standard weight for fully grown live cattle is between 1,200 to 1,400 pounds, although this varies between different producers. To produce live cattle, a female cow is bred with a male or through artificial insemination. Typically, cows bred in the summer will give birth by spring. The offspring are then raised in grazing land until they reach the appropriate weight, at which point the cattle are processed into food and other goods. Researchers have found that all live cattle are descended from a group of 80 domesticated wild cattle from Iran, 10,500 years ago. Live cattle are now bred for many purposes. They are used in the meat industry as a source of beef, and by-products of beef such as gelatine can be used in marshmallows, ice cream and jelly. Their hide can be used to make textiles and materials, and their fat and bones are used in cleaning products, make-up, glue, and piano keys. The price rates of live cattle can fluctuate as a result of many factors. These include production rates, consumer demand, the cycle of the livestock and seasonality. Live cattle have some of the highest rates in meat production, just under poultry and pigs. Live Cattle is tracked as an expiry future traded on the CME exchange.
