Lean Hogs refers to pigs raised in an industrial setting to be a consumable commodity. Similar to other livestock bred for consumption, lean hogs are raised until they reach the appropriate weight and maturity for market sale. Female pigs are bred twice yearly to allow for a steady supply of lean hogs. After being bred, the gestation period lasts 4 months and typically produces around ten piglets. The piglets are raised until they are ready for market, then butchered and redistributed. Wild pigs were originally native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa and were subsequently introduced to North America by Christopher Columbus, where they were domesticated. Pork is one of the biggest outputs of lean hogs and is particularly popular in China and within the European Union. As well as being a widely consumed meat product, lean hogs can be used to create pharmaceuticals such as insulin, cortisone, and oestrogen. It is also used in the production of industrial products such as brushes, glue, buttons, and antifreeze. The price of lean hogs can fluctuate throughout the year, often rising during the warmer summer months due to consumer demand. Other factors that can influence the price of lean hogs include the cost of pig feed, regional demand, and alternative meat competition. Lean hogs are among the top two meat products consumed globally, with poultry reaching the top spot. Lean Hogs is tracked as an expiry future traded on the CME exchange.
